The right living room rug makes the room feel considered. Not in a way that announces itself, but in a way that registers the moment you walk in and that you notice when it is absent. It sets the proportions, anchors the seating group, and gives the space a quiet reason to hold together. Everything else in the room benefits from it.

The one sizing rule that actually matters

For a standard UK living room with a sofa and coffee table, 200×300 cm is the practical minimum. The front legs of your sofa should rest on the rug. That is what creates a defined seating area rather than a collection of furniture that happens to share a floor. If the room runs to an open-plan kitchen or dining space, or you have a corner sofa, 250×350 cm is generally where the proportion feels right.

Leave a margin of floor visible at the edges, roughly 30 to 40 cm, and the rug reads as intentional. When in doubt, size up. A rug that fills the space generously looks deliberate. A rug that is slightly too small looks like an afterthought, and no amount of good furniture or paint choice corrects it.

British brands, in a curated collection

Some of the most recognisable names in British interior design are part of the Tapison collection: Morris & Co, Sanderson, Scion, Laura Ashley, Wedgwood. These are not brands that require introduction to anyone who takes interiors seriously. Morris & Co in particular brings a design heritage that is singular: botanical patterns drawn from William Morris's original archive, translated into rugs that carry the same authority as the fabric collections they share a source with.

Alongside these British names, the collection includes European craft brands — Perletta, Louis de Poortere, Brink & Campman, Layered and others — chosen for quality of construction rather than market presence. The combination means you can find something that is purely decorative, purely practical, or quietly both at once.

The case for wool in a living room

Wool remains the most sensible material for a living room rug, and not purely for the reasons that tend to get repeated. Yes, it resists staining naturally: lanolin in the fibre means spills tend to sit on the surface rather than absorb, which matters in a room used daily. But the more persuasive argument for wool is longevity. A quality Perletta wool rug, handwoven from New Zealand Corriedale and reversible to extend wear evenly, will still look right in ten years. Synthetic alternatives can approach that, but not replicate it. The fibre compresses under foot traffic and recovers. It does not simply flatten.

When the room actually gets lived in

Not every living room is a low-traffic space, and there is no reason to treat it as one. For households with children, pets, or simply a high volume of daily use, Tapison's range of washable rugs provides a practical answer: designs that wash at 30 or 40 degrees without losing shape or colour. The range includes flatweaves and low-pile options that sit comfortably within a considered interior. This is not a compromise. It is a different set of requirements addressed properly.
