Black and white is the most graphic pairing in interiors, and one of the most enduring. A black and white rug brings contrast and structure to a room, yet it behaves like a neutral, sitting as easily with colourful furniture as with a calm, pared back scheme. It suits modern, Scandinavian, minimalist and vintage interiors alike.

Patterns and their effect

Stripes create movement and suit hallways and modern rooms. Geometric designs add structure, while checkerboard and houndstooth make a bold, slightly retro statement. Abstract patterns soften the contrast for a more relaxed feel, and vintage or distressed designs bring character and warmth. A faded pattern gives a quieter elegance than a sharp, high contrast print.

Choosing for the room

In a living room with dark furniture, choose a rug with more white to keep the space light; with neutral furniture, a bolder design adds depth. In a small room, a mostly white rug makes the space feel larger. In a bedroom, a softer abstract pattern in wool or a high pile feels restful. Under a dining table, a flatweave or low pile rug is easiest to keep clean, and a striped runner lends a hallway length. If you prefer a single colour, see our black rugs and white rugs.

Is a black and white rug hard to keep clean?

Less than you might think. A patterned design helps to hide everyday marks, and wool is naturally stain resistant and easy to maintain.
