A kitchen rug is one of the few choices in the home where the practical question genuinely precedes the aesthetic one. What survives here? Once answered, the options that remain are more interesting than most people expect. The kitchen does not require you to choose between function and appearance. It requires you to choose the right construction first, and let the rest follow.

Three constructions account for almost all the serious choices in a kitchen: the flatweave, the runner, and the washable. Each solves the kitchen problem differently. Understanding which one suits your kitchen before thinking about colour or pattern makes the rest of the decision straightforward.

Flatweave: the First Choice for Most Kitchens

A flatweave has no pile to trap grease or crumbs. The surface sits low and flat, cleans easily with a damp cloth for most spills, and lies stable underfoot without curling at the edges or catching on cabinet doors. In polypropylene or recycled PET, it repels surface moisture rather than absorbing it. Louis de Poortere's flatweave ranges, woven in Belgium, bring this construction to a level of design precision that sets them apart from generic flatweaves: the palette is considered, the surface is tight, and the rug reads as a deliberate interior choice rather than a practical concession. A flatweave works in almost any kitchen configuration. It is the baseline choice, and it rarely disappoints.

Runners: Format Determines Function

A runner addresses the kitchen differently from a flatweave. Rather than covering the floor, it follows the cook. Placed in front of the worktop and sink, it marks the working zone, cushions the floor during longer cooking sessions, and contains the area where spills are most likely to occur. For a galley kitchen or a kitchen with a run of worktops along one wall, a runner of 60 to 80 cm wide and 200 to 300 cm long is usually the right proportion. Two runners in an L-shaped kitchen, one on each arm, address the working zone more precisely than a single format across both sides. The construction of the runner matters as much as the flatweave: low pile or flatwoven, in a material that does not absorb what a kitchen produces.

Washable Constructions: the Practical Premium

A washable construction is not a separate category so much as a property that certain flatweaves and low-pile rugs carry. The best of them, in organic cotton or quality synthetic, wash at 30 degrees without losing colour or shape. In a kitchen with children or dogs, this changes the calculation entirely: a light-coloured rug that would otherwise be ruled out becomes a realistic choice. The distinction that matters is between rugs designed to be washed and rugs that technically tolerate a machine cycle. The former retain their character over repeated washing. The latter rarely do. Some of the most considered washable kitchen rugs overlap with what we carry in our terrace collection: weather-resistant, easy-clean constructions that perform equally well indoors on a kitchen floor.

When the Kitchen Opens into Another Room

In an open-plan layout where the kitchen shares visual space with a dining area or sitting room, the rug carries a second brief: it must define the kitchen zone without creating a visual break in the larger space. A flatweave in a neutral that works from both the kitchen side and the sitting room side usually achieves this more quietly than a runner, which reads more directionally. The format needs to be large enough to anchor the kitchen zone: something in the region of 160 x 230 cm or above. A rug that simply sits in front of the hob in an open-plan kitchen looks incomplete. One that defines the whole cooking and preparation area looks considered.

Every order includes free delivery across the United Kingdom and a 30-day return window if the rug does not work in the space.
