Kilim weavers in Afghanistan have always favoured deep reds and ochres. Sky blue is not part of the tradition. Kilim Azure 7812 ignores that entirely, and the result is one of the most striking pieces in the collection.
Across a soft, pale blue ground, a column of large star diamonds unfolds in rust, burnt orange and terracotta — each outlined in black and built from smaller zigzags that catch the eye long before the overall shape registers. A wide chestnut brown border frames the composition, dense with miniature crosses and chevrons, finished with a narrow black edge that gives the whole rug a settled, classic weight. Where some kilims lean towards the playful, this one leans firmly towards the timeless. The combination of that unexpected blue ground with warm earthy diamonds is harder to place historically than most kilims, which is precisely what makes it interesting.
The label on this particular piece carries the weaver's own confirmation — woven by hand in Afghanistan — stated plainly in a way that is rarer than it ought to be. Every line of that diamond pattern was placed by hand, one row of weft at a time. Pure wool, no pile to wear down, colour running straight through the yarn rather than sitting on a backing. Turn it over and the argument for buying it becomes even clearer.
The pale blue field makes Kilim Azure 7812 a natural partner for rooms with stone floors, grey-washed timber and white walls that want warmth introduced without the obvious solution of going red. At 253 by 178 centimetres, it holds its own as a central sitting room rug rather than a corridor piece.
Shake out occasionally. Vacuum gently without the beater bar. Air outside now and then. Lift spills quickly and dry flat.
