The largest kilim in the collection. Also the most uncompromising.
Kilim Cobalt 775 is built around a blue that most kilim weavers would not attempt — vivid, saturated cobalt that has survived the dyeing process at full intensity because hand-dyeing wool the traditional way sends colour deep into the yarn rather than leaving it on the surface. The result is a blue that does not fade into the background as a conventional ground colour might. It participates. Column after column of diamond medallions in burnt orange, violet, mustard and coral are scattered across it with enough breathing room that the cobalt itself becomes part of the pattern rather than merely the backdrop to it. The diamonds seem to float rather than sit, built from sharp zigzag forms that catch the eye from across a room.
At 303 by 203 centimetres, this is the largest piece in the entire kilim collection. No pile, no separate backing — a tight flat weave where the pattern reads almost as clearly from underneath as it does from above, which tells you everything you need to know about how it is made and how long it will last.
A rug this size with a blue this fearless works best as the single bold decision in an otherwise considered room. Simple furniture in timber, linen or leather that steps aside and lets the colour do what it came to do.
Shake out occasionally. Vacuum gently without the beater bar. Fresh air outdoors now and then. Treat spills quickly and dry flat.
