The Tapison Home Kilim Kaleidoscope 769 sets row after row of small hexagon medallions over a deep navy ground, each one its own small burst of mustard yellow, rust orange, teal, burgundy, ivory and dusty mauve. No two motifs repeat in quite the same combination, so the eye keeps finding something new without the rug ever feeling restless or demanding. From across the room it reads as a rich, dark patchwork. Step closer and it resolves into dozens of tiny, deliberate compositions. Both readings are rewarding. The navy is why both work.
Made entirely by hand in Afghanistan from pure wool — no pile, no backing, the pattern built directly into the weave rather than applied on top. This is why it shows through almost as clearly on the reverse as it does on the front. It is also why, at a little over three metres by two, it remains light and pliable enough to roll, move and reposition without difficulty. The wool grows softer and richer in tone with years of light and use, which is a rather pleasant thing in a floor covering.
A medallion may sit a fraction off centre. A dye lot may run slightly warmer in one row than another. These are the marks of a real loom and a real weaver, and the rug in these photographs is the one that arrives at your door.
Both sides equally finished. Flip occasionally for even wear. Vacuum gently on a low setting. Blot spills rather than rubbing. Professional wash every few years.
