Pull back that warm, deep frame and an entire field of pastel diamonds opens up — dusty rose, sage green, lavender and slate blue across an ivory ground, with the occasional flash of burnt orange to keep things from drifting too soft. The contrast between the calm centre and the emphatic edge is the whole character of this piece: gentle from a distance, full of small considered detail up close. It is the kind of rug that works in a room without announcing itself, and rewards closer attention without demanding it.
Made entirely by hand in Afghanistan from pure wool, with no pile and no backing. Every diamond is woven directly into the structure rather than printed or applied afterwards, which is why turning the rug over reveals almost the same pattern in reverse. Flatweave construction keeps it surprisingly light for its near three by two metre size — easy to roll, reposition or take outdoors for airing. The wool softens and deepens in tone the longer it lives with daylight, which makes this a piece that improves with the years rather than despite them.
The muted palette makes Kilim Mirage 149415 unusually adaptable. It adds pattern to rooms built around pale timber, linen and worn brass without raising the temperature of the space. It sits as easily beneath a coffee table as it does under a dining table, and pairs as readily with a single saturated armchair as with an entirely neutral room.
A diamond may sit a thread's width off from its neighbour. A dye lot may run a shade paler in one corner. These are the marks of a single weaver working from memory, and the rug in these photographs is the exact one that arrives at your door.
