The petrol teal border is what the room organises itself around. Everything else follows from there.
The Tapison Home Kilim Peacock 728 works with a compositional logic that reveals itself gradually. Inside that wide teal frame, separated from the field by a narrow ivory guard stripe, lies a dense arrangement of diamonds in rust orange, slate blue, olive, mustard and deep aubergine on an ivory ground. Inside each large diamond sits a smaller one, and inside that, smaller still — so the pattern keeps unfolding the longer you look at it. The ivory ground lets every colour sit forward rather than blur together. The teal border does the opposite, pulling the eye back to the edge and giving the whole composition somewhere to rest. Two opposing functions, both necessary, both working.
Hand-woven in Afghanistan from pure wool, with warp and weft locked together to form the design as the weaver goes. Nothing applied afterwards, which is why the surface feels closer to a textile than a conventional rug, and why it is light enough to roll or fold despite its scale. No pile to crush or flatten over time. Left in daylight, the wool deepens gently in tone over the years rather than fading — a material property that makes a well-made kilim a genuinely long-term proposition.
A border this graphic earns the right to be the loudest element in the room. Keep the furniture plain and let it do its work. It rewards a hallway or a position beside a reading chair, where its colours can be taken in slowly. A single solid cushion nearby tends to serve it better than a second patterned piece.
No second Kilim Peacock 728 will ever be made. The diamond grid may drift very slightly toward one edge. The dye lots shift in small, honest ways from corner to corner. The rug in these photographs is the one that ships.
Both sides finished. Flip occasionally for even wear. Vacuum gently without the beater bar. Lift spills rather than rubbing. Professional wash every few years. Kilims like this one are built to be lived on.
