The border arrives first. A dense, lively band of small diamonds in yellow, orange, pink and violet runs the full perimeter, and only once the eye has adjusted does the rest of the rug reveal itself.
What it finds there is rather different: a deep petrol blue ground carrying a single column of honeycomb medallions from top to bottom, each one its own small composition in coral, ochre, lilac and pale blue. No two medallions share exactly the same palette — the detail that prevents a pattern this structured from ever feeling mechanical. The contrast between that calm blue field and the exuberant border is the entire personality of this piece: restraint and exuberance sharing the same rug without either winning.
Every colour shift was a decision made at the loom, not a print laid over fabric afterwards. Kilim Petrol 149773 is woven entirely by hand in Afghanistan from 100% pure wool, with no pile and no separate backing — weft and warp built up together until the colour runs all the way through. Fold a corner over and the underside carries the same precision as the front. That is the test, and this piece passes it.
At 252 by 178 centimetres, it suits a room that is confident enough to let petrol blue lead — paired with warm timber, brass details, or even a sofa in a similarly saturated colour rather than something too tentative to keep pace with it.
Shake out occasionally. Vacuum without the beater bar. Air outdoors now and then. Lift spills immediately and dry completely flat.
