The rug stays exactly where you put it, the underlay protects your floor from friction damage, and you get a little extra cushioning underfoot as a bonus.
Not all underlays are equal. Look for one made from natural rubber or felt rather than cheap PVC, which can leave marks on hardwood and laminate over time. The underlay should also be cut slightly smaller than your rug, around two to three centimetres shorter on each side, so it stays hidden underneath.
