There is nothing quite as frustrating as a rug that refuses to stay in place. One moment it looks perfect, the next it has bunched up under the sofa or slid halfway across the hallway. Beyond the annoyance, a slipping rug is a genuine trip hazard, particularly for young children and older family members. The fix, thankfully, is simple.
Why rugs slip on hard floors
Hard floors are smooth by nature. Parquet, laminate, polished concrete, ceramic tiles — they all look beautiful, but they give rug backings almost nothing to grip onto. Most rugs are woven or tufted with a flat underside, so the moment someone walks across them, they shift. Add a dog, a toddler, or a busy hallway into the mix, and the problem gets worse quickly.
The solution: a proper non-slip rug underlay
The most effective way to stop a rug from slipping is to use a quality non-slip underlay. It sits between the rug and the floor, gripping both surfaces at once. The rug stays exactly where you put it, the underlay protects your floor from friction damage, and you get a little extra cushioning underfoot as a bonus.
Not all underlays are equal. Look for one made from natural rubber or felt rather than cheap PVC, which can leave marks on hardwood and laminate over time. The underlay should also be cut slightly smaller than your rug, around two to three centimetres shorter on each side, so it stays hidden underneath.
We stock the Rugsman Anti-Slip Rug Underlay, a floor-safe option that works with virtually any rug on any hard surface. It is one of those small purchases that makes a noticeable difference from day one.
Does the size of your rug make a difference?
It does, more than most people realise. A rug that is too small for the space has nothing anchoring it. Once you place furniture legs on top of a properly sized rug, the weight alone keeps it grounded. If your rug keeps moving and you are not sure whether the size is part of the problem, our guide on choosing the right carpet size for your living room is a good place to start.
The short answer
Buy a good underlay, make sure your rug is the right size for the room, and the problem is solved. No complicated fixes, no ongoing adjustments. Just a rug that stays where it belongs.
