The rug is the last decision most people make when furnishing a room. It rarely should be. The right rug sets the character of a space before the furniture arrives, and choosing it last usually means choosing too small, too thin, or too safe. A rug chosen first, with the room still empty, becomes the thing everything else answers to.

Britain has produced some of the most distinctive textile design in the world, and three houses define that tradition in our collection. Construction and Material

Wool is the material to start with for most applications. It recovers underfoot, resists surface soiling through its natural lanolin content, regulates temperature and ages better than any synthetic alternative. Handtufted wool, as used by Sanderson, Harlequin and Brink & Campman, offers the most immediate depth and texture: the pile is dense and the surface reads as quality before you step on it. Handwoven wool, as in the Perletta and Layered collections, produces a different quality: the surface is the structure, and the result is a rug that reads differently in every light and changes subtly as the angles shift through the day. Cotton is naturally soft, washable and well suited to lower-traffic spaces and children's rooms. Pattern and Colour in the British Interior

The British interior presents a specific set of considerations when choosing a rug. Most rooms, particularly in older housing stock, already carry significant visual information: cornicing, skirting detail, timber floors with grain and patina, existing curtain fabric or wallpaper. The most reliable principle is one strong pattern per visual plane. If the walls carry a strong pattern, the floor benefits from restraint: a textured wool or a tonal flatweave that adds warmth and material depth without competing. If the walls are plain, the floor can carry the pattern, and a Sanderson or Morris & Co design with botanical or repeating motifs becomes the room's defining gesture.

Rooms with Georgian or Victorian proportions, high ceilings and large windows can accommodate bolder choices than lower, more compact modern rooms, where a heavily patterned rug can quickly dominate. Getting the Size Right

The most reliable sizing rule is to go larger than feels correct on paper. Most people underestimate by one size, and the consequences are immediate: a rug that floats in the middle of a room without anchoring the furniture around it makes the space feel smaller and less resolved, not larger. Measure the footprint of the intended furniture arrangement, then add at least 60 cm on each side. That number, not the floor area, determines the right format. If the result falls between standard sizes, go up rather than down.

By Room

In the living room, the front legs of the sofa and any flanking chairs or armchairs should rest on the rug: anything less produces a disconnected arrangement where the furniture appears to float away from its own centre. For a standard three-seater sofa with two armchairs, 200 x 300 cm is the minimum; in larger or open-plan spaces, 240 x 340 cm or above reads in better proportion to the room and gives the rug the presence it needs to anchor the arrangement. In the dining room, chairs should remain on the rug when pulled out to sit, which means adding at least 60 cm beyond the table on all sides: for a 200 cm dining table, that is a rug of at least 320 cm in length. In the bedroom, a minimum of 60 cm should extend beyond both sides and the foot of the bed, providing a continuous soft surface rather than an isolated mat; for a king-size bed, this typically means a rug of 250 x 350 cm or above. Runners suit hallways, kitchen zones and the spaces alongside beds where a full rug would be too much, and where the format itself does much of the visual work.

Underfloor Heating and Rug Pads

Most rugs in this collection are compatible with underfloor heating, though construction determines the degree. Low-pile and flatwoven rugs transmit heat efficiently without significant insulation loss. Thicker handtufted or high-pile constructions retain more warmth beneath them, which can reduce the efficiency of the heating system and, in wool rugs, may dry out the fibres if the floor temperature consistently exceeds 27 degrees Celsius. A rug pad is worth specifying beneath any rug placed on a hard floor. It prevents movement, which is both a safety consideration and a maintenance one: a rug that shifts underfoot wears unevenly and damages the floor surface beneath it through friction. A good pad also adds a small but noticeable degree of cushioning underfoot and extends the life of the rug itself. For rooms with underfloor heating, choose a pad specifically rated for that use, as some rubber compounds degrade under sustained warmth or leave marks on sensitive parquet, stone or engineered timber surfaces. Pads are best specified to the exact dimensions of the rug rather than trimmed from a larger standard size.
