Collection: Atlantic Streaks Rugs | Louis de Poortere
Wind on wet sand, essentially. Atlantic Streaks takes the streaked ripples a winter gale leaves on a beach and reads them as an abstract. There is no figure and no motif, just direction, which is why it reads as calm rather than busy. The streaked direction also does something useful in a narrow room: run it lengthways and the room reads longer, run it across and it reads wider.
Twelve designs, in three shapes
Long Island Blue and Nassau Red at the stronger end, Coney Grey and Glen Cove quieter, Sea Bright Sunny and Montauk Multi somewhere in between. Six come as rectangles, six as rounds, and the rectangles include an 80 by 250 cm runner.
Recycled PET, washable, suitable outdoors
Woven from recycled PET. That makes it washable, fit for outdoor use, and unbothered by sunlight in a way wool is not. Given what the design is about, a terrace or a garden room is arguably where it belongs.
Made in Belgium
All 12 are woven in Belgium on jacquard looms. Rectangles are 0.4 to 0.5 cm, rounds 0.7 cm. Thin enough to go under a door and for dining chairs to slide over, suitable for underfloor heating, anti-allergic and anti-static.
Sizes and how to choose
Rectangles in 80 by 150, 80 by 250, 140 by 200, 170 by 240, 200 by 280, 240 by 340 and 280 by 390 cm. Rounds in Ø 140 and Ø 240 cm. The 80 by 250 cm is the one for a hallway, a kitchen galley or a long landing. 200 by 280 cm for a three seater with an armchair. 240 by 340 cm over a six seater dining table.
Atlantic Streaks questions, answered
What is an Atlantic Streaks rug made of?
Recycled PET, woven on jacquard looms in Belgium, in a flat weave.
Can it be used outdoors?
Yes, all 12 are suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Bring it in over winter to extend its life.
Is there a runner?
Yes. Several designs come in 80 by 250 cm, which is the hallway and kitchen size.
Which Atlantic Streaks design is the quietest?
Coney Grey and Glen Cove. The streaks are there but the contrast is low, so from standing height the rug reads as a soft texture rather than a pattern. Long Island Blue and Nassau Red are the opposite, and work better in a room that can carry them.
Is it washable?
Yes. Water and a mild detergent, vacuum regularly, blot spills rather than rub them.
