Layered is a Stockholm-based design label that makes rugs the way a fashion house makes clothing: with a named designer, a coherent point of view, and collections that are designed rather than produced. Founded in 2015 by Malin Glemme, the brand has been covered by Homes & Gardens, House & Garden and Vogue, and has won the Elle Deco Accessory of the Year award. All production takes place in Bhadohi, India, in small family-run weaving workshops, using only natural or recycled materials: pure new wool, recycled PET, jute, sisal and cotton.

Layered in British Interiors

What makes Layered work particularly well in British interiors is a combination of restraint and deliberateness. The collections do not shout. They have a quiet authority that sits well alongside original floorboards, high ceilings and the kind of furniture that has been chosen to last. The Röllakan flatwoven wool collection, based on a Swedish medieval weaving technique, has become a fixture in the kind of Georgian and Victorian rooms where pattern rugs would compete and plain ones would disappear. It lies completely flat over uneven original floors, develops a patina with use, and asks very little of the room while giving it a great deal.

Alice Crawley and the Artist Series

The Artist Series is where Layered separates itself most clearly from every other rug brand. Rather than a single design direction, Layered works with named artists who produce collections entirely in their own voice. Crucially for the British market, one of those artists is Alice Crawley, a British visual artist whose graphic colour-block compositions in hand-tufted wool carry the energy of painting into the floor plane. For British buyers who already know her work, seeing it available in rug form is a genuine discovery. Evelina Kroon, a Scandinavian artist, brings architectural precision and tonal restraint. Poppykalas, a Swedish illustrator, produces constructions that sit between pattern and illustration. Norwegian designer Erik Bratsberg contributes the Lozza series in handwoven wool, where the colour shifts depending on the angle of light.

Wool Collections: Solid, Swedish Homage and Teklan

The wool collections cover the full range from practical to decorative. Solid Wool is handwoven in pure new wool across a palette from Bone White and Oatmeal through to Ruby Red and Chicory Coffee. Swedish Homage is the hand-tufted premium line, with a surface depth that works particularly well in the larger reception rooms that Georgian and Edwardian houses tend to have. The Teklan collection, hand-tufted in wool with a deliberate tension between outer field and interior motif, is Layered's most architecturally considered design and reads well in rooms that already have strong proportions.

Natural Fibres, Shaggy and the Cord Collection

For buyers drawn to natural fibres, Layered's jute, sisal and cotton collections offer a considered alternative to the mass-market options. The Basket Weave and Strata constructions in particular suit the kind of restrained, natural interior that has become the dominant aesthetic in British homes over the past decade. The Residue shaggy wool collection brings a different register entirely: deep, full-bodied pile suited to bedroom and informal sitting room use. The Cord collection, a collaboration with Stockholm furniture producer Massproductions, is handwoven in wool with the stripe as a structural rather than decorative element. Colourways: Black White, Yellow Oatmeal, Burgundy Rust and Blue Brown, from 75 by 240 cm runner to 300 by 400 cm.
