A north facing sitting room can feel cold by four o'clock in January, and this is the kind of rug that fixes it. Acsento Origin Brick is woven in narrow lines of brick red, rust and burnt orange, deepened by threads of dark brown, so the warmth comes across as earthy rather than bright. The surface is matt with a slight nubbly grain, which keeps the colour grounded.
Put it on honey coloured boards in a 1930s semi alongside a rattan chair, a cane sideboard and a few big leafy plants, and the room starts to feel like late summer. It also works under a kitchen table, where a bit of colour is welcome but a loud pattern would fight the crockery. A table for six needs the 230 x 340 cm, a sofa and chair are well served by 190 x 290 cm, and the 155 x 230 cm warms a bedroom floor.
Origin is a machine woven rug from Belgium, made in polyester. Its pile stands just 8 mm tall and the grippy latex back holds it still. Chairs pull in and out without catching, and it may be used over underfloor heating. Vacuum weekly, and when something spills, cover it with a dry cloth and press rather than scrub.
