What do a walnut sideboard, a stone hearth and a linen sofa have in common? They all get along with brown, and Acsento Origin Brown is a very good brown. Fine, irregular lines of cognac, caramel and bitter chocolate run across it, the paler threads carrying a soft sheen, so from a few steps away it has the grainy look of a natural fibre rug.
Laid on the parquet of an Edwardian house beside the original fireplace, it gives the dark wood something to talk to, while in a bright new build it stops pale furniture from floating. A travertine side table and a wool throw finish the picture. The 190 x 290 cm is right for most sofas with one armchair. Under a dining table for six, take 230 x 340 cm, and beside a bed, 155 x 230 cm.
Machine woven in Belgium from polyester, Origin has an 8 mm pile and a non slip latex underside, and it is suitable for underfloor heating. The blend of browns is forgiving with daily scuffs. A thorough vacuum each week is enough, and spilt tea or wine should be dabbed up promptly, never rubbed in.
