Count the stripes and you will lose track somewhere past forty. Siena 51 from Acsento lines up sand, caramel, ochre, rust and charcoal in bands that wobble ever so slightly, the way yarn does on a hand loom, and from across the room they settle into a single warm beige with a soft glow.
Direction matters with a striped rug. Run the bands across a narrow Victorian sitting room and the walls seem to step back, or lay them lengthwise in a through lounge to pull the eye towards the garden. Terracotta pots, a rattan chair and a sofa in oatmeal linen keep it relaxed. For a three seater flanked by armchairs, go to 200 x 290 cm. A bedroom needs no more than 160 x 230 cm, and a dining table for six is happiest on 240 x 340 cm.
Siena is machine woven in Belgium from polyester, three quarters of it recycled, with a low 8 mm pile, a subtle sheen and a latex backing that holds it still on the floor. Underfloor heating poses no problem. Give it a pass with the vacuum once a week and press a dry cloth onto any spill the moment it happens.
