Picture a still January afternoon, deep petrol blue against a blush sky, and you have the mood of Decor Miller Winter. The blue claims a tall curved panel on one flank and reappears as a smaller, inkier oval up top. Blush beige, a sandy arc, a pale cream form and a wide base of charcoal brown complete the composition, all held inside a loose oval. Close to, the wool looks dense and matt, with a gentle lustre as light passes over it.

Give it a sitting room with a period fireplace and walnut or warm oak boards, a dark timber lounge chair and a sofa in navy, slate or ivory, and the rug becomes the one bold statement in the room. Repeat the petrol just once, perhaps on a velvet cushion, and keep the rest restrained. It is equally at ease beneath a round or oval dining table, and beside a bed it brings depth without coolness. Most sitting rooms are well served by 200 x 280 cm, larger ones by 250 x 350 cm.

Winter is crafted in India by hand tufting. The yarn is 100% pure new wool, its cut pile reaches 17 mm, and cotton with latex seals the underside. Its oval is measured at the longest and broadest point. Feel free to use it over underfloor heating. Each piece is handmade, so a touch of variation in dimensions and colour is to be expected. Pure new wool is resilient and good at disguising everyday dirt. Should something spill, press a dry cloth onto it at once instead of rubbing.
