Camel is one of those colours that never turns cold, and Senso Blocks Fur Brown makes the most of it. The ground is a soft brown mélange flecked with sand, and on it three rectangles sit one above the other, each outlined by a slim ridge of wool. Their sides lean ever so slightly, more sketchbook than ruler, and the ridges catch raking light from a window, so the pattern seems to come and go as the hours pass.

Put it in the front room of a 1930s semi with a bay window and it warms the space without any fuss: a walnut sideboard, a tan leather armchair, a lamp on a black metal stem, walls in a soft off white. It is just as easy in a bedroom with an oak bed and ochre linen. For a bedside or a small snug, the 140 x 200 cm and 160 x 230 cm sizes are right. A sofa with a pair of chairs wants 200 x 280 cm, and open plan living can take the full 250 x 350 cm.

Woven flat by hand in India, Senso is pure new wool and rises only about 6 mm, so doors and dining chairs pass over it easily. The reverse is left bare, which keeps it supple but makes a non slip underlay wise on boards or tiles. It is suitable for underfloor heating. Being made by hand, each piece can differ a little in size and tone. Vacuum with a plain nozzle, and if something spills, press a dry cloth onto the spot straight away.
