Three blocks, one above another, with sides that lean ever so slightly, as if sketched on the back of an envelope. That is the whole design of Senso Blocks Natural, outlined in a fine raised line on a soft sand beige with oatmeal flecks. Line and ground share the same shade, so relief does the work instead of colour. Underfoot the flatweave is firm and dry, with the honest grain of real wool.
Thin and steady, it comes into its own beneath the family table, where chairs slide back easily and stand without wobbling. Pair it with a light oak table, chairs with rush seats or linen cushions and a generous pendant overhead. Side light by day brings the blocks forward, candlelight melts them into one calm surface. Let the rug run a good 60 cm past the table edge all round, which makes 250 x 350 cm the size for a table for six.
Senso Blocks is made for Brink & Campman, a Dutch rug maker, a hand woven Indian flatweave of pure new wool around 6 mm thick. It is safe on underfloor heating. Because there is no backing, wood, tiles or vinyl call for a non slip underlay. Wool keeps everyday grime out of sight. Vacuum with the brush roll off and blot spilled wine or coffee immediately with a dry cloth.
