Greige gets a bad name for being dull, and Senso Planes Soft Taupe quietly proves otherwise. The colour sits between cool grey and beige, lifted by lighter flecks in the yarn. Three rectangles of different sizes slide across one another, woven as a fine raised line rather than printed, so they come and go as you walk around the rug. Underfoot the flatweave is firm with a slight grain.
On a pale resin floor or the polished concrete of a new build, it takes the edge off all that hardness, and beside chrome, glass and cane it supplies the warmth they cannot. Put a pale grey sofa on it and a low stone table in front, and let the off centre lines peep out from beneath. A sofa with two armchairs sits well on 200 x 280 cm, and a wide open plan room can take the 250 x 350 cm.
Only about 6 mm thin, the rug lets doors swing freely and chairs glide, which makes it a good choice under a dining table too. It is pure new wool, flatwoven by hand in India, and since it has no backing a non slip underlay should go beneath it on tiles, boards or laminate. Underfloor heating poses no problem. Use a smooth vacuum head, and soak up spills at once with clean kitchen paper or a dry cloth, pressing rather than rubbing.
