Hundreds of short marks in rust, amber, teal, wine red and a soft grey run in rows and sweep round in curves over an ivory field. Harlequin Frescoes Amber started life as oil pastel on suede, and it still has the slight wobble of a hand at work in every stroke.

Seen from the sofa, it is a pale rug with a scattering of colour. Which means it can carry bold pieces happily in an open plan new build: cobalt dining chairs, pale birch, a brass floor lamp. It also forgives crumbs and everyday life far better than a plain cream rug ever could. Choose 250 x 350 cm under a big family table, 200 x 280 cm in front of the sofa and 140 x 200 cm for a bedroom.

Frescoes has a low 11 mm pile, hand tufted in India in pure new wool, on cotton and latex. Doors and dining chairs glide over it without catching. It is compatible with underfloor heating. No two pieces are exactly alike, a sign of handwork. Run the vacuum over it weekly on a gentle setting, and dab at spills with a white cloth that is clean and dry.
