Green, and only green. Harlequin Sedimentary Pine stacks six or seven bands from deep pine at one end through sage and celadon to a pale, misty tone at the other, so the rug reads like a view over wooded hills. The edges of each band waver and blur, and the colour seems to drift as you look at it.
Keeping to one colour family makes it unusually restful. In a cottage with low beams and limewashed walls, lay it beneath a linen sofa with a big potted fern beside it, or use it to give a sculptural armchair its own stage in a loft conversion. Warm brass lighting pulls the greens towards olive in the evening. The 200 x 280 cm size handles most living rooms, and a long runner of 80 x 300 cm brings the same calm to a landing.
Sedimentary Pine is made in India, where pure new wool is tufted by hand into a 17 mm pile and fixed to cotton and latex. Underfloor heating will not trouble it. Every piece varies a touch in shade and measurement, as handmade rugs do. Light shedding is normal at first. Vacuum with the rotating brush turned off, and if anything is spilled, blot it with a clean dry cloth rather than rubbing it in.
