Picture a painter trying out greens on a sheet of ivory paper. That is Harlequin Zeal Forest: broad horizontal strokes of forest, fern, sage and moss piled up through the middle of the rug, with slate blue and ink slipped in between and a few thin lines trailing off towards the edges.
It loves a garden view. In a kitchen extension with big glazed doors, it sits happily under a long oak table, or in front of a tan leather sofa with cushions in navy and olive. The pale ground keeps the room open, while the stacked colour gives the seating area a clear middle. Around a dining table the 250 x 350 cm size is the one to pick, and a runner of 70 x 245 cm will cover a short hall.
Zeal Forest comes from India, hand tufted in pure new wool with a pile of 17 mm and a cotton and latex back. You can use it over underfloor heating. Work done by hand leaves every rug with slight quirks of size and colour. The light ground shows marks sooner than a dark one, so a regular vacuum on suction only pays off, and spilled drinks are best caught at once with a dry, clean cloth.
