Blue and ochre have always got on well, and Harlequin Zeal Indigo proves it again. Loose horizontal brushstrokes in petrol, indigo and sky blue cross an ivory ground, some wide and solid, others no thicker than a pencil line, broken here and there by strokes of ochre and warm grey.
The effect is fresh and airy, like a harbour on a bright morning. It is at home in a Victorian terrace with red brick showing, oak furniture and an ecru sofa, and it does not mind chrome or glass either. Turn it lengthways or across and the stripes change how long or wide the room feels. A snug or bedroom takes 170 x 240 cm, a bigger living room 250 x 350 cm, and the 80 x 300 cm runner covers a long passage.
Zeal Indigo is tufted by hand in India. Pure new wool gives it a 17 mm pile, and the back is made of cotton and latex. Underfloor heating suits it fine. Size and tone may vary slightly from rug to rug. A weekly vacuum without a rotating head keeps it at its best, and the trick with spills is to soak them up with a dry cloth before they settle.
