Drift Wool Bone White Rug

Picture a Georgian drawing room at eight in the morning, the light slanting in through tall sash windows and settling on a Bone White rug that looks more like fresh chalk than paint. This is Drift Wool from Layered, a plain colour given life by fine ribs that run across the surface, catching the sun in soft lines and turning almost silky as evening falls.

White underfoot makes a room feel wider and quieter, so let it sit beneath a pale linen sofa, a few handmade ceramics and one or two pieces of dark oak for weight. Plaster walls and a marble mantelpiece suit it beautifully. Choose 180 x 270 cm for a bedroom or a modest sitting room, 200 x 300 cm for a sofa with a pair of armchairs, 250 x 350 cm for a generous reception room and 300 x 400 cm when you want the floor to read as one calm, pale expanse.

Made in Bhadohi, India, it is loom woven by hand in pure wool over a cotton warp. A mix of cut and looped pile, roughly 15 mm deep, creates that ribbed texture. It is happy on underfloor heating. As with anything made by hand, expect slight variations in size and shade. Fresh fleece lets go of some fluff to start with, then calms down. Vacuum with the beater bar switched off, and blot any spill promptly with a clean, dry cloth.
