Solid Wool Green Umber Rug

Late August, a hayfield gone gold and green at once, is roughly the mood of this Green Umber rug. It is a khaki wool weave that sits halfway between olive and warm brown, plain in colour yet never flat, thanks to a gentle lustre that picks up lamplight and moves across the dense, low surface.

It is a natural partner for a Victorian terrace with stripped floorboards and an open fire, where the khaki calms the orange of the pine and sets off white plaster and black iron. Because it hides the traces of family life well, it earns its keep in a room you actually use. Woven by hand in India from 100% wool by Layered of Sweden, it has a pile of roughly 15 mm and works well with underfloor heating. No two handmade pieces are quite identical in measurement and tone, and that is part of their character. Loose fibres surface at first and dwindle with each pass of a hoover whose spinning head has been turned off. Dab spills promptly and resist the urge to scrub.
