Think of a well cut striped jacket from Savile Row and you are halfway to this rug in Racer Stripe Betty Brown. Bands of sky blue and cream run across a deep chocolate ground, with one thin line of mustard for good measure. The flat weave gives a warm, matt surface, so the stripes feel crisp without looking hard.

In a Victorian terrace with bare boards, brown and blue look entirely at home beside walnut, old leather and a view of the garden. Slide it beneath your desk, or run it down the hall. The runners come in 75 x 240 cm and 80 x 300 cm, ideal for a narrow hallway or long landing. 140 x 200 cm suits a study or bedside, 180 x 270 cm a smaller sitting room, 200 x 300 cm a sofa with armchairs, and 250 x 350 cm or 300 x 400 cm a large room.

The design is by Tom Morris, the London interior architect behind Morrisstudio, who drew on classic English stripes for CLOTH, his collection with Layered. Bhadohi, India, is where it is made, on a pit loom set into the ground so the weaver sits with the pedals in a hollow below. The outcome is a dense flat weave of 100% wool, around 6 mm, ready for underfloor heating. Handmade, it varies a touch in size and shade. Vacuum it without a beater bar, blot spills promptly, and ignore a little early shedding.
