Jockey silks on a summer afternoon at the races set the mood for this rug in Racer Stripe Cooper Green. An olive and moss ground carries stripes of chocolate, cream and pale blue, plus a fine line of racing red that gives the whole thing a bit of pace.

In a converted barn with oak beams and a long corner sofa, it brings colour without fuss, especially beside tan leather. 250 x 350 cm anchors that kind of open space, 300 x 400 cm takes in a whole seating group, and 200 x 300 cm holds a sofa with two armchairs. For a reading corner or bedroom, 140 x 200 cm and 180 x 270 cm work well. The runners, 75 x 240 cm and 80 x 300 cm, bring a stripe of colour to a kitchen or boot room.

Tom Morris, a London interior architect who runs Morrisstudio, designed Racer Stripe for Layered, borrowing from English tailoring, shop awnings and racing silks. Weaving happens in Bhadohi, India, on a pit loom sunk into the earth, and yields a dense, flat wool cloth of roughly 6 mm. Underfloor heating is perfectly fine beneath it. Each one is made by hand, so size and shade can wander a little. Young wool sheds slightly at the start. A vacuum with no spinning brush keeps it fresh, and spills are best soaked up, never scrubbed.
