Remember the striped awning over a café on a bright morning? This rug in Racer Stripe Margarine carries that feeling indoors: a pale ground of butter and straw, striped with wide chocolate bands and slim lines of yolk yellow. It is cheerful, but the dark bars stop it from ever feeling sugary.

Racer Stripe belongs to CLOTH, which London interior architect Tom Morris of Morrisstudio created for the Swedish rug house Layered. It is woven on a pit loom in the Indian town of Bhadohi, the weaver working the pedals from a recess in the floor, which produces a tight flat weave of 100% wool about 6 mm deep. It lies low and suits underfloor heating. As handwork, expect gentle shifts in size and shade. Give it a vacuum with the beater bar disengaged, expect a touch of fluff early on, and lift spills with an absorbent cloth.
