Taupe brown, the colour of a damp garden path, gives sisal a more grown up look. Belize Taupe has a flat, tightly woven surface with a subtle pattern running through its structure, firm underfoot and quietly rugged, the sort of floor that looks better the more it is used.
It is at its most useful by the front door. The 80 x 150 cm size catches the worst at the threshold of a cottage with flagstones, and the runners of 90 x 200 and 90 x 300 cm cover a long hallway or landing. In open plan living, 300 x 400 cm takes a whole seating area and 240 x 320 cm a dining table for six. There are rounds too, at 200 and 245 cm across, and 160 x 240 cm for a modest room.
Massimo Copenhagen, a Danish brand, has Belize woven in India from 100% sisal. Underfloor heating is no obstacle. As with any natural fibre, a small difference in size and shade between rugs is to be expected. Sisal and moisture do not mix, so wet cleaning is out. A regular pass with the vacuum stops grit from settling, and a spill needs blotting straight away before it can sink in.
