Borage Grey 131004 Rug

Charcoal sets the tone. On Morris & Co Borage Grey a tight weave of small flowers in stone grey, ivory and soft ochre spreads across a dark field, mirrored in several directions, inside a light border finished with a thin terracotta rule. The pattern comes straight from the Arts and Crafts heritage of William Morris.

Layered like this, grey feels warm rather than cold. Worn leather, linen and old pine all look right on it, and in a white room with tall windows it gives a focal point without bringing in a loud colour. Seen from the doorway it melts into a soft texture, and up close there is always another flower to find. A Georgian drawing room or a big kitchen diner takes 250 x 350 cm, and 200 x 300 cm will hold a sofa with a chair on each side.

Knotted by hand in Nepal, Borage Grey has an even, dense 12 mm pile of pure new wool, knotted onto a cotton foundation, and is fine over underfloor heating. Knotted rugs are never identical, so allow a few centimetres either way, and a gentle shift in tone between pieces. A weekly going over with a smooth nozzle is all it needs, and anything spilled wants dabbing up before it can sink in.
