Want a room to feel welcoming at once? Lay a red rug. Morris & Co Persian Scroll Plum does it with rosettes, palmettes and curling tendrils in aubergine, cream, ink blue and olive, spread over a warm red that leans towards plum. The motifs come from an old Morris & Co embroidery and repeat like a Persian garden seen from above.

With no border to stop it, the repeat carries on to every side, which suits a room where the rug slips partly under furniture. Put it near the hearth with polished brass, old turned furniture and a pale linen sofa, or in a study lined with books in a 1930s semi. A sitting room with a three seater takes 200 x 280 cm, and the 140 x 200 cm size brings instant warmth to a study.

Tufted by hand in India, Persian Scroll has a full, soft pile of pure new wool, 17 mm high, on cotton with latex, and it is fine over underfloor heating. Some shedding during the first month is simply new wool settling down. Strong direct sun is best avoided. Vacuum on a low setting, and blot any spill as soon as it happens.
