Few colours are as obliging as bottle green. Brown leather glows on it, it calms a marble fireplace and carries blue and green cushions without effort. Morris & Co Theodosia Bottle Green winds curling foliage and stylised flowers over that ground in the Jacobean manner, the blooms drawn in ivory around centres of copper and caramel, with a little soft blue.
The flowers are spread evenly, so there is no wrong way round, a real help when chairs and sofas surround it on all four sides. Think of a cottage snug with a wood burner, a pair of worn leather armchairs and shelves of books, or a mansion block flat with high ceilings and parquet. The 200 x 300 cm size fits most sitting rooms, and 250 x 350 cm lets the whole seating group stand on it.
Theodosia comes from Nepal, where it is knotted by hand in pure new wool over a cotton foundation to a height of 12 mm. Because wool soaks up dye so thoroughly, the green ground carries soft variations of tone that keep it alive. Sizes may vary slightly too. It suits underfloor heating. Skip the beater bar when vacuuming, and if something spills, lay a dry cloth over it and press.
These hand knotted pieces are made in very small numbers. Please get in touch before you order, so we can confirm availability and timing for your size.
