Built like a classic carpet, Morris & Co Wilton Weave Indigo has a central field, a full border and, between the two, a slim stripe of rose. Within it, olive green leaves form a close trellis over deep indigo, studded with flowers in blush pink, madder red and pale blue.
Because the drawing is so dense, from a distance it reads as rich colour and only gives up its finer points once you stand over it. It is happiest with a deep sofa, a pile of patterned cushions and a wall of well read books. Pale walls and old stripped boards in a Victorian or Edwardian house show it off best. Go for 200 x 280 cm in most living rooms, or 250 x 350 cm to fill a larger one.
Wilton Weave is hand tufted in India. The 17 mm pile is all pure new wool, and a sturdy cotton and latex backing helps it lie flat. Underfloor heating is fine. Being made by hand, it can differ slightly in size and shade. Every few months, swing it through 180 degrees to spread the wear, vacuum with suction alone, and draw spills up with an absorbent cloth.
