Contour lines on an Ordnance Survey map are the closest comparison. On Torino 063.0934.3293, colour fields move from cool grey through sand to warm taupe, with darker anthracite pools and a few pale, almost white glimmers like sun breaking through cloud. Fine lines carved into the pile trace the edge of each field, so the pattern has real relief.
Because it carries warm and cool notes together, it can bridge a grey sofa and an oak floor, and it looks right on polished concrete or slate tiles too. Black steel, walnut and natural linen all suit it. Where an open plan living space is all smooth, plain finishes, it brings layers and shadow while keeping the palette muted. The short, level pile lets dining chairs move freely, so 240 x 330 cm under a table for six is a good use of it, with 200 x 290 cm for the sofa end.
From Tapison Home, this Torino is woven by machine from polyester, with an 11 mm pile and a neat taupe grey edge. It can lie over underfloor heating and holds its colour. Vacuum it regularly, deal with a spill by blotting with a damp cloth, and give it a turn now and again so the traffic lanes do not show.
