Wine dark plum, mauve and rose, with one pale olive band running across and lit here and there with burnt orange: Torino 063.0934.7274 has the colouring of a ripe fig sliced open. Near black patches in the corners hold everything together, and the tones are flecked in so finely that the whole surface flickers from claret to blush to mossy green.
Purple is tricky in an interior unless it is this layered. Grooves cut into the low pile lift every colour field slightly, so nothing reads flat. Dark wood, aubergine or forest green velvet, aged brass and low lamplight all suit it, and it gives an ordinary grey or beige sofa real personality. In the painted bedroom of a Victorian villa it feels rich and cocooning, and 160 x 230 cm sits well at the foot of the bed.
Torino, from Tapison Home, is machine woven polyester with a short, dense 11 mm pile, and underfloor heating suits it fine. The colours do not fade quickly. To look after it, vacuum regularly, dab up spills promptly with a damp cloth instead of rubbing them in, and give it a half turn every so often.
